CoalConnect Alliance - Expression of Interest – Plant Operators

Creating Rail Solution

To meet the significant growth in Queensland’s coal industry, QR is undertaking extensive upgrades across Central Queensland’s rail system to increase coal capacity.

QR has appointed CoalConnect, an alliance between QR, construction firm Leighton Contractors and designers GHD and Kellogg Brown & Root (KBR), to deliver the Northern Missing Link and Buckley to Newlands upgrade.

The Northern Missing Link will provide the vital connection between North Goonyella and Newlands rail systems in Queensland’s northern Bowen Basin coalfields. This 69-kilometre rail link will allow coal trains from Central Queensland to travel directly to the Port of Abbot Point, significantly increasing the region’s coal export capacity. Likewise, coal trains from Newlands will have the option of unloading at Dalrymple Bay.

The Buckley to Newlands Upgrade works involves upgrading the existing 140-kilometre rail line, track duplications and new turning loops. Included in this works is the Briaba deviation involving 11km of new ‘greenfield’ construction.
